Using High Level Petri Nets in the Modelling, Simulation and Verification of Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems

Abstract: In Reconfigurable Manufacturing Systems (RMSs), the structure of the system can be changed during execution of the system. This reconfiguration can be motivated by a new requirement in the production process, or to avoid some problems caused by machines breakdowns. These systems offer a high flexibility leading to more productivity and efficiency. However, their design is more complicated implying new techniques and paradigms. The use of formal high level Petri Nets offers the ability to design these systems a… Show more

“…The work of Reference [7] presented the reconfigurable finite-capacity Petri net (RFCPN) for the dynamic configuration of a flexible MS. An RFCPN is a Petri net extension that can be used for modeling, simulating, and validating simultaneous systems, which are subject to changes. Kahloul et al [8] used reconfigurable object nets (RONs) to model, simulate, and analyze RMSs. The study proposed a formal approach to meet a new requirement (production of bricks used in slabs).…”

“…To solve the problem, the scheduling rules have been integrated into a knowledge base for multi-objective scheduling. For example, Kahloul et al [20] integrated a knowledge base scheduling system into the FMS design and set up the corresponding PN model. Kim et al [21] developed a PN-based simulation method that generates priority rules from the knowledge base during changes and conflicts to solve the scheduling problem.…”
