Augmented Reality (AR) technologies for supporting maintenance operations have been an academic research topic for around 50 years now. In the last decade, major progresses have been made and the AR technology is getting closer to being implemented in industry. In this paper, the advantages and disadvantages of AR have been explored and quantified in terms of Key Performance Indicators (KPI) for industrial maintenance. Unfortunately, some technical issues still prevent AR from being suitable for industrial applications. This paper aims to show, through the results of a systematic literature review, the current state of the art of AR in maintenance and the most relevant technical limitations. The analysis included filtering from a large number of publications to 30 primary studies published between 1997 and 2017. The results indicate a high fragmentation among hardware, software and AR solutions which lead to a high complexity for selecting and developing AR systems. The results of the study show the areas where AR technology still lacks maturity. Future research directions are also proposed encompassing hardware, tracking and user-AR interaction in industrial maintenance is proposed.

This article presents an augmented reality-based instruction (ARBI) system for maintenance tasks. A traditional manual instruction method and a computer-assisted instruction method were compared. Three maintenance instruction methods, three task difficulty levels (low, medium, and high), and the user's gender (male and female) were specified as the independent variables in the experimental design. The dependent variables included task completion time and error rate as objective measures, and system usability scale (SUS) and NASA-task load index (NASA-TLX) scores as subjective measures. There were 30 participants (15 males and 15 females) in the experiment. The results indicated that the instruction method and task difficulty significantly affected the task completion time, error rate, SUS, and NASA-TLX.Among the instruction methods, the ARBI method exhibited the highest SUS score, lowest NASA-TLX score, shortest task completion time, and minimum error rate. In conclusion, the proposed ARBI method was beneficial for assisting iPhone maintenance tasks.

Augmented Reality (AR) technology makes it possible to present information in the user's line of sight, right at the point of use. This brings the capability to visualise complex information for industrial maintenance applications in an effective manner, which typically rely on paper instructions and tacit knowledge developed over time. Existing research in AR instruction manuals has already shown its potential to reduce the time taken to complete assembly tasks, as well as improving accuracy [1][2][3]. In this study, the outcomes of several aspects of AR instructions are explored and their effects on the chosen Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) of task completion time, error rate, cognitive effort and usability are assessed. A standardised AR assembly task is also described for performance comparison, and a novel AR experimental tool is presented, which takes advantage of the flexibility of internet connected peripherals, to explore various different aspects of AR app design to isolate their effects. Results of the experiments are given here, providing insight into the most effective way of delivering information and promoting interaction between user and computer, in terms of user performance and acceptance.
