Purpose -The importance of networks in effecting the outcomes of change processes is wellestablished in the literature. Whilst extant literature focuses predominantly on the structural properties of networks, our purpose is to explore the dynamics of network emergence that give rise to the outcomes of process improvement interventions. Through the use of ActorNetwork Theory (ANT) we explore the dynamics in the implementation of a process improvement methodology in the complex organisational setting of a UK National Health Service Trust. The paper illustrates the utility of ANT in articulating the dynamic nature of networks underpinning socio-technical change, and our analysis provides insights for the management process change initiatives.Design/methodology/approach -This is a rich qualitative study in the Pathology Unit of a UK National Health Service Trust, using ANT as the theoretical lens for tracking the emergence and transformation of networks of individuals over the course of a management intervention to promote "Lean thinking" for process performance improvements.Findings -ANT is useful for explicitly tracking how organisational players shift their positions and network allegiances over time, and for identifying objects and actions that are effective in engaging individuals in networks which enable transition to a Lean process. It is important to attend to the dynamics of the process of change and devise appropriate timely interventions enabling actors to shift their own positions towards a desired outcome.Research limitations/implications -We make the case for using theoretical frameworks developed outside the operations management to develop insights for designing process interventions.Originality/value -By understanding the role of shifting networks managers can use timely interventions during the process implementation to facilitate the transition to Lean processes: e.g. using demonstrable senior leadership commitment and visual communication.Paper Type -Research paper.

. Universidad del País Vasco RESUMEN En este trabajo se analiza la relación existente entre el modo en que se interioriza el estándar ISO 9001 y la mejora de la efi ciencia en costes. Se trata de un aspecto que no ha sido sufi cientemente analizado en trabajos previos de la literatura, que, por un lado, suelen asumir el principio de adopción homogénea del estándar, y, por otro lado, suelen centrarse en otras medidas del desempeño empresarial. Además, dichas investigaciones suelen basarse en la opinión ofrecida únicamente por los directivos de las empresas que adoptan el estándar.En el artículo se proponen nuevos elementos de categorización para los conceptos de interiorización y efi ciencia en costes relacionados con ISO 9001, inferidos de un estudio de casos llevado a cabo en organizaciones de sectores diversos, para el que se contó con la participación de diferentes grupos de interés internos de la empresa (directivos, mandos intermedios y empleados). Las conclusiones del artículo, que incluyen una serie de proposiciones susceptibles de ser contrastadas en futuros trabajos, pueden resultar de interés tanto para los investigadores de esta línea de trabajo, como para los propios profesionales implicados en la adopción del estándar. PALABRAS CLAVE Gestión de la calidad; ISO 9001; Efi ciencia en costes; Interiorización.ABSTRACT This article analyzes the relationship between internalization of ISO 9001 and cost efficiency. This is an issue that has not been analyzed in previous works of the literature, since, on the one hand, the majority of the works tend to assume the principle of homogenous adoption of the standard, and, on the other hand, they tend to focus on other measures of business performance. Moreover, those works use to be based only on the opinion of the managers that adopt the standard.Thus, new insights for the categorization of both the concepts of internalization and cost effi ciency associated with ISO 9001 are proposed in the article, based on an extensive case study survey carried out in organizations from very different sectors and analyzed from the perspective of a number of internal stakeholders of the companies (general managers, middle managers and employees). The fi ndings are aimed to be of the interest of the researchers of the fi eld, as well as of the practitioners involved in the adoption of the standard. -In this research note we describe a method for exploring the creation of causal loop diagrams (CLDs) from the coding trees developed through a grounded theory approach and using computer aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS). The theoretical background to the approach is multimethodology, in line with Minger's description of paradigm crossing and is appropriately situated within the Appreciate and Analyse phases of PSM intervention. The practical use of this method has been explored and three case studies are presented from the domains of organisational change and entrepreneurial studies. The value of this method is twofold; i) it has the potential to improve dynamic sensibility in the process of qualitative data analysis, and ii) it can provide a more rigorous approach to developing CLDs in the formation stage of system dynamics modelling. We propose that the further development of this method requires its implementation within CAQDAS packages so that CLD creation, as a precursor to full system dynamics modelling, is contemporaneous with coding and consistent with a bridging strategy of paradigm crossing.Keywords-multimethodology; paradigm crossing; qualitative data analysis; causal loop diagrams (CLDs); computer aided qualitative data analysis software (CAQDAS); problem structuring methods (PSMs)
