Using Google Health Trends to investigate COVID-19 incidence in Africa

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused over 500 million cases and over six million deaths globally. From these numbers, over 12 million cases and over 250 thousand deaths have occurred on the African continent as of May 2022. Prevention and surveillance remains the cornerstone of interventions to halt the further spread of COVID-19. Google Health Trends (GHT), a free Internet tool, may be valuable to help anticipate outbreaks, identify disease hotspots, or understand the patterns of disease surveillance. We collecte… Show more

“…Correlation with Google search queries has been investigated for vastly different medical conditions and in various clinical or population scenarios and settings, both related and unrelated to reproductive health issues. 21 25 However, the correlation estimates that we quantified between search on Google about IUDs and actual IUD insertion rates is a new contribution to the evidence in this area. Related literature includes Guendelman et al 26 who showed US state policies on abortion could predict search volumes for abortion.…”

“…Such an approach has been widely used to study human behaviour (Mavragani et al, 2018) – particularly in health (e.g. Fulk et al, 2022) – but has rarely been applied in education research. By drawing on this resource, we can provide a much more comprehensive overview of the attention that ILSAs have received globally since the mid-2000s.…”

“…It uses these data to provide a relative search volume (RSV), which is the query share of a particular term for a given location and time period, normalized by the highest query share of that search term [7]. Utility of these data is still in its infancy, but the data have been used successfully to predict outbreaks of influenza [10], norovirus [11], and COVID-19 [12]; the impact of disease awareness programs [13,14]; and the seasonality of searching for pain-related conditions [15]. With mpox being a rare disease and relatively unknown outside of endemic regions, we aimed to explore online health information seeking behaviors in both endemic and nonendemic regions using Google Trends.…”
