Using Gaussian and Hyperbolic Distributions for Quality Improvement in Construction: Case Study Approach

Abstract: The Gaussian distribution and the Six-σ principle have been widely used in the field of construction quality management with great success. This paper proposes a theoretical study on a new Hyperbolic distribution using the Six- principle to improve quality in construction management. The Hyperbolic and Gaussian distributions are then numerically compared by estimating their important statistical properties such as population in range, number of defects, yield percentage and defects per million opportunities. “…The most popular choice for lines by far is the so‐called normal parameterization, which describes the position of a line by its distance ρ from the origin and the direction of its normal vector θ . Gaussian template is widely used in weighted average (Le, ; Tam, Le, & Le, ). The shape of the template is a bell‐shaped curve, with the largest weight situated in the center.…”

“…Points in each group have similar parameters. Then, in order to exclusively locate the Kikuchi band, the frequently used Gaussian template is used in the weighted average (Le, ; Tam et al, ). The shape of the template is a bell‐shaped curve, with the largest weight situated in the center.…”

“…in many studies on this subject, it was emphasized that the use of the process approach in enterprise management leads to the improvement of productivity and competitiveness of an enterprise in the construction market (Burati, oswald 1993;Soares, anderson 1997;Pheng, Teo 2000;Han et al 2012). Moreover, in the process approach to management, special attention is paid to continuous improvement and achieving customer satisfaction (Tam et al 2008;Tchidi et al 2012).…”

“…Other quality methods such as lean production and six sigma have found success in the manufacturing market, but they have been unable to find a niche in the construction industry, creating ambiguity (Sullivan, 2011;Tam et. al., 2008).…”
