Based on inverse modeling of reaction progress data using a numerical framework that considers coupled advection and diffusion, linear and nonlinear reaction kinetics, and with effective diffusivity given by Archie's law, we show that (1) choice of reaction order has little effect (<0.3 orders of magnitude) on estimates of time-integrated and time-averaged metamorphic fluid fluxes and metamorphic fluid flow durations based on reaction progress data, (2) reaction order must be known for robust determination of time-averaged net reaction rates based on reaction progress data and that underestimation of this term by more than 3 orders of magnitude can arise from assuming linear reaction kinetics, (3) differing reaction orders between laboratory experiments and natural metamorphic systems and/or a nonlinear dependence of effective diffusivity on porosity can explain order-of-magnitude discrepancies between field-based and laboratory-based estimates of time-averaged net reaction rates, and (4) parameterization of metamorphic fluid flow is limited to time-averaged values which fail to account for the possibility that metamorphism occurs in short-lived pulses during longer time periods of metamorphic quiescence.

Short-duration regional metamorphism is a recently observed and poorly understood phenomenon in metamorphic geology. In this review, it is defined as metamorphism on time scales that limit length scales (of the associated thermal anomaly) to significantly less than the thickness of the orogenic crust (<10 myr) or subducted oceanic lithosphere (<5 myr). Without appealing to exceptional heat sources, thermal models have been unable to account for peak metamorphic temperature during collisional orogenesis and subduction. This observation, combined with restricted time scales for regional metamorphism, suggests that metamorphic facies series can record atypical and transient thermal conditions (related to punctuated and localized heat advection and/or production), rather than normal, ambient conditions for the tectonic setting to which they are allied. Highprecision geochronology can resolve short-duration metamorphic estimates of 1 -10 myr. However, diffusion geospeedometry typically yields extremely short metamorphic durations (<1 myr); tools in metamorphic geology may have matured to the point that the discipline is beginning to recognize episodicity and criticality in deep processes. New, very high-precision petrochronology techniques offer great potential to probe the veracity of extremely short metamorphic durations being obtained from diffusion geospeedometry. Benchmarking of these new very high-precision petrochronology techniques must become a priority for metamorphic geology.Received 26 May 2016; revised 2 October 2016; accepted 27 October 2016Early interpretations of the geological record leant heavily on catastrophism. As geology matured as a science, uniformitarianism came to supersede catastrophism. Uniformitarianism offers a more sophisticated, logical framework for interpretation of the rock record within the context of current and observable processes. However, the grand success of the uniformitarian philosophy has also resulted in a propensity toward interpretation of deep (and thus unobservable) geological phenomena in terms of slowly evolving or steady-state processes. A notable example of this preference for gradualism in deep processes has been ideas for the origins of regional metamorphism and metamorphic facies series, and implications for the nature of tectonism. Barrow (1893Barrow ( , 1912 was the first to map regional metamorphism on the basis of diagnostic mineral assemblages. His Barrovian metamorphic sequence, exposed in NE Scotland, comprises a series of 'isograds' marking the first appearance of chlorite, biotite, garnet, staurolite, kyanite and sillimanite in pelitic lithologies, in the direction of increasing metamorphic grade. [1] Burial histories of subduction zone rocks are often difficult to accurately constrain, owing to a lack of robust mineral geobarometers applicable to high pressure mineral assemblages. Knowledge of the depthhistories of subduction is, however, required for our understanding of global geochemical cycles, subduction-related seismicity, and the evolution of destructive tectonic boundaries. The high spatial resolution of quartz inclusion geobarometry can be used to determine pressure evolution during metamorphic growth of individual garnet crystals. Quartz inclusions in garnet from Sifnos, Greece, preserve such a record of the pressure of garnet growth, allowing detailed reconstruction of the metamorphic evolution of these rocks. Pressure-dependent Raman spectra of quartz inclusions were combined with elastic modeling to infer the conditions at which they were trapped during garnet growth. All measured inclusions suggest that garnet growth occurred between 19 and 20.5 kbars, with little evidence for significant pressure variation during the garnet growth interval, which is interpreted to record $100 C of heating. Coupled with thermometry and geochronology, these results show that early, cold burial was followed by a phase of rapid heating, which immediately preceded exhumation.
