Using Fuzzy Cognitive Maps as a Decision Support System for Political Decisions

Abstract: Abstract. In this paper we use Fuzzy Cognitive Maps (FCMs), a wellestablished Artificial Intelligence technique that incorporates ideas from Artificial Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic, to create a dynamic model of the Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Crisis in March 2001. FCMs create models as collections of concepts and the various causal relations that exist between these concepts. The decision capabilities of the FCM structure are examined and presented using a model that is developed based … Show more

“…Carlucci et al 2013). This type of cognitive mapping has since been applied in a wide range of different decision situations (an extensive deliberation falls outside of the scope of this paper; but for further discussion, see Tsadiras et al 2003;Kok 2009;Salmeron 2009;Yaman and Polat 2009;Papageorgiou et al 2012;Salmeron 2012).…”

“…After Kosko's pioneering work, FCM has been widely applied in different decision making contexts (e.g. Tsadiras et al 2003;Kok 2009;Salmeron 2009Salmeron , 2012yaman, Polat 2009;Papageorgiou et al 2012;. This type of cognitive map has two particular characteristics: (1) the relationships between nodes follow a fuzzy logic, meaning that causal relationships are simultaneously represented by a sign of positive/negative causality and by an inten-Downloaded by [University of Sussex Library] at 10:30 21 June 2016 sity/influence degree number, which ranges from -1 to 1; and (2) the system incorporates ideas from artificial neural networks and fuzzy logic, involving feedback links among concepts/criteria, which allow temporal aspects to be dynamically considered in the decision making process Carvalho 2013).…”
