Using Floating Wetland Treatment Systems to Reduce Stormwater Pollution From Urban Developments

Abstract: Floating treatment wetland (FTW) systems are an innovative stormwater treatment technology currently being trialled in Australia. FTWs provide support for selected plant species to remove pollutants from stormwater discharged into a storage basin. The plant roots provide large surface areas for biofilm growth, which serves to trap suspended particles and enable the biological uptake of nutrients. FTWs can be installed at the start of the construction phase and can therefore start treating construction runoff a… Show more

“…There have been numerous studies undertaken in the past to assess the nutrient removal performance of CFWs for stormwater runoff in freshwater environments such as lakes and ponds [1,2,5,6,7,11]. Headley and Tanner [7] reported on different plant species that had been used in CFWs worldwide for water quality enhancement in freshwater environments.…”

“…This paper describes the results of a two-year field study undertaken to evaluate the pollution removal performance of a CFW designed to treat stormwater runoff from an existing urban development in Queensland, Australia. Preliminary results of this study were presented in Nichols et al [11] and Schwammberger et al [12].…”

“…When more than one CW type is combined in one facility, this is called a hybrid wetland system. Furthermore, floating treatment wetlands (FTWs) are artificial wetland systems that mimic the water treatment processes occurring in natural floating wetland islands and consist in a floating structure planted with emergent macrophytes [28]. The two key characteristics of CWs are the plant species and the substrate media.…”
