Using Exploratory Structural Equation Modeling (ESEM) to Examine the Internal Structure of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms

Abstract: Several studies have reported the factor structure of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The results show models with different number of factors, high correlations between factors, and symptoms that belong to different factors in different models without affecting the fit index. These elements could suppose the existence of considerable item cross-loading, the overlap of different factors or even the presence of a general factor that explains the items common source… Show more

“…China was the first country to be affected by the COVID-19 outbreak and was ultimately severely affected, resulting in a high risk of infection among the residents. According to the Life Events Checklist for DSM-5 (LEC-5), which is part of the PCL-5, this type of experience constitutes a traumatic event ( 21 ). Thus, in the present study, residents of different regions of China were selected and instructed to rate how much they were affected by the outbreak of COVID-19 in the last month by completing the PCL-5.…”

“…However, our results also showed that the best fit of the two-factor model occurred when items with cross-loadings were eliminated. As frequently observed in studies on PTSD measures, we found cross-loading issues (Fresno et al, 2020), and our final model comprised five items. Although it is a considerable item reduction, our decision was based on two reasons.…”
