Using Electromagnetic Signal Propagation Models for Radio and Television Broadcasts: An Introduction

Abstract: This note offers an introduction to electromagnetic signal propagation models, which can be used to model terrestrial radio and television signal strength across space. Such data are useful to social scientists interested in identifying the effects of mass media broadcasts when (i) individual-level data on media exposure do not exist or when (ii) media exposure, while observed, is not exogenous. We illustrate the use of electromagnetic signal propagation models by creating a signal strength measure of military… Show more

“…In addition, we combined proprietary data from the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) on the location of cell phone towers in the year 2013, with the most precise global-scale elevation data available, the 30-meter resolution ALOS Global Digital Surface Model, to estimate an Irregular Terrain Model (ITM) [40] and assess the strength of cell phone coverage. We used this measure of signal strength, defined between -50 and -140 decibel-milliwatts (dBm), to create a dichotomous variable of cell phone coverage.…”

“…It has been demonstrated that negative framing of refugees influences mass attitudes: support for redistribution and integration diminishes (Avdagic and Savage 2020). We also refer to studies of political communication that demonstrate that consistent messaging has a non-trivial effect on party support and electoral outcomes (DellaVigna et al 2014; Adena et al 2015; Butler and De La O 2011; Crabtree and Kern 2018).…”

“…In cases where the number of precincts is more than one, I average the result of vote. To estimate the reception of Russian analog TV in every county, I used RadioMobile, a tool for predicting radio and TV wave propagation based on Irregular Terrain Model (ITM) described in Crabtree and Kern (2018). ITM takes into account the power and the frequency of the transmitters, the height above the ground and geographical coordinates of the towers, elevation data and the signal path loss.…”
