BACKGROUND The electrochemical recovery of copper and chelating agent from their complex solution using a membrane flow cell was investigated. The parameters electrolysis time, solution pH, current density, and temperature were investigated. RESULTS Electrochemical investigation indicated that chelating ligands can be recovered by the electrodeposition of copper ions on the cathode. For copper and EDTA recovery, the results indicated that recovery efficiency was affected by time, current density, and temperature. The recovery process was not influenced by pH in the range studied (pH 8–12), which can be explained by the low variation in the conditional stability constant, i.e. Δlog10 K' ≤ 0.7, over the pH range. However, when NTA, EDTA, and DTPA were compared, the results indicated that the recovery efficiency decreased as the conditional stability constant of the chelating agent–Cu(II) complex increased. The maximum current efficiency of copper and EDTA recovery after 5 h of treatment was approximately 85%, whereas the recovery was 80% of the initial concentration (0.05 mol L−1) at a current density of 1 A dm−2, temperature of 333 K, and pH of 10. CONCLUSION Relatively high recovery efficiency makes the process fairly sustainable and hinders the discharge of copper ions and chelating ligands as pollutants into the environment. © 2016 Society of Chemical Industry

This study examined the efficacy of electrokinetic remediation of chelated mine tailing soils with mixed heavy metals. Electrokinetic experiments were conducted in a nontraditional bench-reactor that contained intermediate liquid collection interfaces within treatment zones between the electrodes. Tests were conducted using 0.05 M Na 2 EDTA as the chelating permeant. Tap water was used in control experiments. A constant direct current voltage of 20 V (electric field & 0.625 V/cm) was applied across working electrodes for 48 h. Transient and spatial distribution of pH, conductivity, oxidation-reduction potential (E h ), and cumulative mass of the metal species in solution were measured. In all experiments, including controls, a larger portion of soluble metals were found in the anode reservoir, indicating transformation of the metals into complex species of negative charge, reverse electroosmotic advection toward anode, and/or colloidally assisted transport. Na 2 EDTA was expected to increase the metal extraction into the analyte as it produced negatively charged complexes with the metals. Soluble mass of the metals was markedly low in the catholyte, with heavy precipitation of metal hydroxide salts in the ensuing high pH, low E h environment. Total removals of all three metals were either unchanged or lower, for the same duration of treatment with 0.05 M Na 2 EDTA than with tap water. Results showed that chelating agents, as was exemplified with a commonly used ligand in here, may not be advantageous in enhancing electrokinetic remediation of heavily contaminated mine tailings. In such substrates, metals' transport and removal regime (i.e., rate, sequence and preference of extraction) appeared to be influenced more so by the type of metal and transient distribution of the pH-E h under the electric field than the solubilizing effect of a ligand within the treatment zone.

Efficiency of electrocoagulation process for the removal of heavy metals (Pb 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Co 2+) from simulated wastewater was investigated using iron electrode pair at five operational variables: pH (2-10), current density (0.076-0.189 A/cm 2), interelectrode distance (3-7 cm), solution temperature (30-70 C), and charging time (5-20 min). Experiments were conducted as per central composite design (CCD), and the data was used for model building. Algorithmic optimization via hybrid response surface methodology (RSM)-genetic algorithm (GA)-particle swarm optimization (PSO) was studied where Pb 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Co 2+ removal efficiency were monitored as responses from the finding equations of the CCD. Transition to the optimum removal (≥90%) of Pb 2+ , Mn 2+ , and Co 2+ ions was achieved with current density of 0.19 A/cm 2 , solution temperature of 70 C, mean electrode distance of 3 cm and pH of 6.6 and charging time of 25 min for PSO relative to GA and RSM. Corresponding experiments conducted with the global optimal conditions show that the actual results (98.5, 90, 99%) were in reasonable agreement with the theoretical results of
