Service discovery has been recognised as an important aspect of service oriented computing. This is even more the case when developing service centric systems in which software systems are constructed based on the identification and composition of web services that together can fulfil the functionality of the system being developed. In this paper we present a framework that supports the discovery of services that can provide the functionality and satisfy the properties and constraints of service-based systems during their design phase. Our framework makes use of linear composition of service operations in which more than one web service operations can be combined to fulfil a functionality of the system when no single operation can be identified. The discovery process is based on a graph-matching algorithm. A prototype tool has been developed to demonstrate and evaluate the framework.

Since web services intended for the same application environment tend to be functionally homogeneous, researchers have turned to their non-functional aspects in order to constructively compare web services and choose an appropriate one. In general, quality of service is very important to users. Many schemes that consider quality assessment have been proposed for web service selection. With the increasing number of qualityrelated attributes, an effective quality assessment method needs satisfactory scalability. Schemes based on the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) meet this requirement. However, prevalent methods in this vein overlook the fact that the traditional AHP needs a complete judgment matrix. In practice, all the information needed to construct a judgment matrix is often unavailable for a variety of reasons, due to which certain judgments cannot be made. In this paper, for an incomplete judgment matrix, we propose an improved AHP approach to consistency verification and the subsequent ordering. Our method can deal with situations where information is insufficient, and inherits all the merits of the traditional AHP approach. A case study establishes the effectiveness of our proposed method. With the increasing deployment of functionally similar web services by different service providers, non-functional aspects, which are often referred to Quality of Service (QoS), play a vital role in ranking web services. Various users may have different priorities of QoS attributes. However, ordinary users are lacking in the ability to map their plain requirements to the obscure technical QoS metrics advertised by service providers. Moreover, the QoS information advertised by different service providers is untrustworthy due to various factors. Even after a painstaking analysis of the candidate services, users will still have a difficult time in the selection of services. To address the issue of web service selection, we propose in this paper a collaborative QoS-aware service evaluation method which is based on the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) theory. In our method, QoS data of services is recorded by past users according to their usage experiences. A potential user collects QoS information of services from past users. The service with the highest benefit to cost ratio among candidate services is selected through the aggregation of the collected QoS information. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the performance of our proposal
