Using Data Sonification to Overcome Science Literacy, Numeracy, and Visualization Barriers in Science Communication

Abstract: Sharing the complex narratives within scientific data in an intuitive fashion has proven difficult, especially for communicators endeavoring to reach a wide audience comprised of individuals with differing levels of scientific knowledge and mathematical ability. We discuss the application of data sonification-the process of translating data into sound, sometimes in a musical context-as a method of overcoming barriers to science communication. Data sonification can convey large datasets with many dimensions in … Show more

“…As mentioned earlier, tactile representation of graphical information can be used for analysis by BLV learners. Auditory representation of data through sonification for exploratory purposes is becoming a significant aid and has been used for spectra analysis and in the form of a free-standing tool . More development work needs to be accomplished in this area.…”

“…For spatial representations, visualization methods generally tend to provide a concise picture. As discussed in [28], it is not uncommon that these methods might be proven less effective when it comes to time-series data representation. The evolution of an optimization algorithm is a process over time, and, if characterized in terms of metrics, can be thought of as a multivariate time-series.…”
