Using Critical Social Theory as Professional Learning to Develop Scholar—Practitioners in Physical Education: The Example of Bourdieu’s Theory of Practice

David H. K. Brown,
Rhys G. Lloyd

Abstract: In this conceptual article, we present the idea that the physical education (PE) teacher is, out of professional necessity, a scholar—practitioner. To substantiate and evolve this idea, we develop a Deweyian pragmatist view of the scholar—practitioner which also embraces criticality. This stance collapses the binary notion of theory and practice and instead embraces theory and practice as a duality. We add a critical dimension to this duality through recognising that scholar—practitioners (especially leaders) … Show more

“…Rethinking positionality and enhancing reflexivity through the lens of Bourdieu's capital, field and habitus Unlike classic sociological theories and concepts presented earlier in this paper, which are helpful in understanding researcher positionality, reflexivity is paramount in Bourdieu's theories, offering disaster researchers a framework to enhance their critical reflexivity. Browne and Lloyd (2024) advocated employing Bourdieu's theories to promote criticality and cultural awareness in physical education, showcasing its applicability beyond traditional sociology and anthropology. In this section, I outline how Bourdieu's theories can provide a critical tool to help disaster researchers critically examine their own positionality in any given research settings and to enhance disaster researcher's awareness of their subjectivities and foster reflexivity in disaster research.…”
