Using concepts in literature‐based discovery: Simulating Swanson's Raynaud–fish oil and migraine–magnesium discoveries

Abstract: Literature-based discovery has resulted in new knowledge. In the biomedical context, Don R. Swanson has generated several literature-based hypotheses that have been corroborated experimentally and clinically. In this paper, we propose a two-step model of the discovery process in which hypotheses are generated and subsequently tested. We have implemented this model in a Natural Language Processing system that uses biomedical Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) concepts as its unit of analysis. We use the sem… Show more

“…The best known of the these are based on the approach originated by Swanson, in his 'literature-based discovery', identifying linkages between the medical literature on the basis techniques for identifying and displaying terms in text and indexing, which are in common in different areas of knowledge. These methods have since been developed and since applied more widely [12].…”

“…For example, the term Raynaud Syndrome has semantic type Disease or Syndrome and Fish Oil has semantic type Lipid. We choose the same semantic types used by Weeber et al [7] and Srinivasan [10]. Thus, the semantic types for linking concepts in the present study are …”

“…Most state of the art MKD systems are based on Swanson's original method Gordon and Lindsay, 1996;Pratt and Yetisgen-Yildiz, 2003;Weeber et al, 2001), some with several improvements (Hu, 2005). A limitation of MKD, however, is that it requires both the source and the target terms as input.…”
