Using building information modeling on a highway project

Abstract: Building information modelling (BIM) is to be implemented on all UK government construction projects by 2016 to help cut costs. Ben Sibert of Arup explains how BIM is being used on a section of the A465 highway dualling in south Wales and the lessons being learned on the way.

“…The development of frameworks to describe specific subjects or integration of components was prominent with 38 publications. With the rest of the main body taken up by case studies for example use of BIM on the heads of the valleys project in the UK [60] and the Northern Hub Rail Improvements [61], subject analysis themes such as an analysis of BIM implementations in infrastructure [68] and literature reviews.…”

“…As an example of BIM application of highway projects, here are three articles that belong to two different dimensions. The first, Sibert (2013), belongs to the third dimension purpose/ outcome relationship, as it mainly focuses on the interoperability of BIM tools. The paper explained how BIM can provide a structured approach to design data storage and sharing for design teams, contractors and operators.…”

“…As reported in our recent briefings (Sibert, 2013;Vernikos, 2012), BIM will be required on all UK public sector projects by 2016. Neath et al (2014) describe how Gatwick airport -the busiest single-runway airport in the world -has taken an early lead by placing BIM at the heart of its ongoing infrastructure investment programme.…”
