Due to the Covid-19 situation, the tourism sector has faced several challenges to be able to gradually continue with its different activities related to the tourism experience. Therefore, the sector has had to reinvent itself to return to the tourism activity; from this context arises the need to explore various technologies and, within this, the different types of augmented reality (AR). This paper is a systematic review of the literature. The following databases were considered: IEEE Xplore, Springer Link, Scopus, and Science Direct. The PRISMA methodology was used to collect and synthesize information. As a result, the different contributions of AR were systematized, and the most used type of AR and the main factors that influence the improvement of the tourism experience with the support of an AR-oriented application have been rescued. Finally, a proposed model for establishing AR-related systems to provide a better tourism experience is presented.

Virtual and augmented reality technologies have known an impressive market evolution due to their potential to provide immersive experiences. However, they still have significant difficulties to enable fully fledged, consumer-ready applications that can handle complex tasks such as multi-user collaboration or time-persistent experiences. In this context, CultReal is a rapid creation and deployment platform for augmented reality (AR), aiming to revitalize cultural spaces. The platform’s content management system stores a representation of the environment, together with a database of multimedia objects that can be associated with a location. The localization component fuses data from beacons and from video cameras, providing an accurate estimation of the position and orientation of the visitor’s smartphone. A mobile application running the localization component displays the augmented content, which is seamlessly integrated with the real world. The paper focuses on the series of steps required to compute the position and orientation of the user’s mobile device, providing a comprehensive evaluation with both virtual and real data. Pilot implementations of the system are also described in the paper, revealing the potential of the platform to enable rapid deployment in new cultural spaces. Offering these functionalities, CultReal will allow for the fast development of AR solutions in any location.

These days, we receive most information through digital mediums such as emails and social networking applications. Investigating the characteristics of human-paper interactions can help us design more meaningful interactions and better understand why people use paper documents in the age of digitalization. In this study, the interaction of people with physical documents was studied through a mixed-method of conducting a literature review, gathering expert opinions, interviewing subjects, and analysing Instagram photos. By codifying the gathered information, the human-paper interaction framework was developed. This framework articulates the advantages of physical documents compared to electronic documents and serves researchers and practitioners by providing insightful human factors about human-document interaction. Finally, we propose six design themes as the solutions to the findings of this study. These implications can provide practical foundations for future design and research.
