Using appreciative inquiry on learning styles to facilitate student learning

Abstract: student's perspective. Students who have completed the curriculum have experience with its content and the perspective necessary to synthesise it in a meaningful way. This includes an understanding of when and how relevant material is presented and what level of content might be appropriate for students at particular time-points. Students can also draw connections between pieces of the curriculum because they experience it in its entirety. We felt that, with guidance from faculty staff, students interested in … Show more

“…Not only does the awareness of learning styles increase flexibility of teaching styles and improve communication between instructors and students (Naqvi & Naqvi, 2017), it also enhances the teachers' capacity to help students develop strategies for adapting in differing situations (i.e different learning styles), especially when learning styles do not fit to a task (Bhagat, Vyas, & Singh, 2015;Vaughn & Baker, 2001). Indeed, the awareness of learning styles can create a better learning environment by enabling students to use appropriate strategies in different situations (Kumar & Chacko, 2010).…”

“…Anatomy teachers should also consider discussing with their new medical students some evidence that supports deep and strategic learning as opposed to an emphasis on knowing, pass marks, and grade point averages. There have been reports that sensitizing learners about the process of learning primes them to go beyond academic performance (Hendry et al, 2005; Kumar and Chacko, 2010; Khalil et al, 2018). Therefore, anatomy instructors need to continually probe which aspects of strategic and deep approaches have a greater contribution to academic performance and to determine whether deep and strategic learning approaches can improve the clinical skills and engagement in lifelong learning (Feeley and Biggerstaff, 2015) and problem‐solve (Zhang et al, 2017).…”
