Using an ontology to improve search in a terrorism database system

Abstract: In this paper we present our implementation of a Terrorism Database System and show how to leverage the expressive power of an ontology to improve search and document retrieval by extending the knowledge base of Oracle Text. We begin with a brief introduction to our Terrorism Database System, now in production. Then we describe the structure of the ontology, the interface for knowledge workers to add/edit/delete the content of the ontology, and the techniques for semiautomatic term generation as well as semant… Show more

“…This can be a challenge when prohibitively high volume of data is hard to be processed in real time. A research in [8] used ontology to improve search in their terrorism database. They demonstrated their idea on Oklahoma City National Memorial Institute for the Prevention of Terrorism (MIPT) and the Office for Domestic Preparedness, U.S. Department of Homeland Security database.…”

“…Research in the use of ontologies is ongoing as their popularity increases. A majority of this research is in the area of organising and searching the World Wide Web, as discussed by Mahalingam and Huhns (1997) and also by Stojanovic (2005), and in the area of extracting data from databases, as referred to by Biskup and Embly (2003) and also by Gruenwald, McNutt and Mercier (2003). The use of ontologies in the arena of forensic computing is new but it is potentially powerful, given the success of ontologies in other arenas.…”
