A Software Process Line (SPrL) is potentially suitable for constructing software development methodologies by reusing core assets. However, adopting this approach without prior assessment of its suitability can lead to failure. The aim of this paper is to identify a set of requirements that can be used for deciding whether to adopt the SPrL approach in an organization. Identification of the requirements was accomplished in two stages: the characteristics important in method tailoring were first identified via a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) that focused on analyzing 43 primary studies; the degree of importance of the identified characteristics was then determined using a questionnaire survey in which 31 experts participated. By analyzing the results of the SMS and the survey, we have identified 12 productrelated, 22 project-related, and 10 organization-related requirements. In addition to these requirements, we have also identified two relevant requirements by studying previous research on Software Product Lines (SPL) and Business Process Lines (BPL). The requirements thus identified can help organizations decide on whether to adopt the SPrL approach: the more an organization satisfies the requirements, the more frequently method tailoring occurs in that organization, and hence, the more justified it is to adopt the SPrL approach.

Over the last decade, the use of agile methods has grown dramatically for software development. Agile methods guarantee to accelerate the delivery of remarkable software with increased user satisfaction and reduced cost. However, in recent years, due to emergence of green software engineering, software developers are compelled to focus more on green and sustainable aspects of software. Global software engineering aims to design, develop, and use a software with limited energy and computing resources. Recently, software engineers in global software development (GSD) have adapted agile methods for quick, interactive, and environment‐friendly software development. However, there is a lack of specific practices to be followed by GSD vendors in the development of green and sustainable software. In this study, we have identified 36 agile practices through systematic literature review and applied contrived search criteria derived from the research questions; 53 relevant papers were identified and reviewed. Findings of the systematic literature review were then empirically validated through questionnaire survey in GSD industry, in which 106 relevant experts from 25 different countries participated. The identified agile practices are intended to assist GSD vendors in strengthening their agile maturity towards green and sustainable software development.

Sustainability of Systematic Literature Reviews

Context: Systematic Literature Review (SLR) has been increasingly adopted in Software Engineering (SE) because it is considered the most reliable way to gather evidence from the literature. At the same time, SLR currently consumes much time and effort to be conducted, and its results have not impacted the software industry as expected. Despite several solutions proposed to solve the problems of SLR, the research remains very fragmented failing to provide a bigger picture of the problems and associated solutions. Objective: This study introduces the concept of sustainability in SLRs to the SE community as a holistic view of the current research scenario putting together a solid knowledge base that includes definitions, guidelines, and the main leveraging points of sustainability in current SLR conducted in SE. Method: After conducting a tertiary study investigating the main characteristics of sustainability of software systems, we applied the meta-ethnographic method to transpose sustainability characteristics into SLR context by identifying, adapting, synthesizing, and validating those which could aid researchers in conducting more useful studies with less effort. Finally, we extracted a sample of high-quality studies conducted in the SE area, next, we applied a sustainability view to identify the flaws that lead to unsustainable SLR. Results: Our study provides an overview of the role of sustainability in the SLR context and provides important assets for SE community to identify what are sustainable SLR, such as 15 characteristics of sustainable SLR and 15 sensitive points of SLR process that are considered critical factors to achieve sustainability. In addition, we propose 16 guidelines to support researchers to improve sustainability in their SLR and identified 13 leveraging points found in relevant studies in SE area that together represent actions that should be adopted immediately to enhance the sustainability of SLR. Conclusion: Our work represents a starting point for a mindset shift in the SE community about the importance of creating more sustainable reviews. Furthermore, we believe that sustainability is the missing key concept that could connect many advances achieved over the years of research and remove barriers that hinder SLR from providing useful information in a timely manner for academia and industry. Henceforth, we believe that researchers should observe sustainability as a first-class citizen while conducting/updating SLR to make them compatible with the sustainability view.
