Using a conceptual model in nursing research – mitigating fatigue in cancer patients

Abstract: Aim-This paper is a discussion of the use of the Levine Conservation Model to guide the investigation of an exercise intervention to mitigate cancer-related fatigue.Background-Researchers use conceptual models or theoretical frameworks to provide an organizing structure for their studies, to guide the development and testing of hypotheses, and to place research finding within the context of science. Selection of an appropriate and useful framework is an essential step in the development of a research project.

“…Similarly, as can be seen in Table 1, few researchers ( n = 7) stated they had utilised a theoretical framework. Such a framework provides an organising structure for the research design and methods and may also explain the study results and place the findings in context (Mock et al . 2007).…”

“…Similarly, as can be seen in Table 1, few researchers (n = 7) stated they had utilised a theoretical framework. Such a framework provides an organising structure for the research design and methods and may also explain the study results and place the findings in context (Mock et al 2007). In studies where a theoretical framework was utilised, the interpretation of findings could be seen to flow from the conceptualisation represented by the framework (Radwin & Fawcett 2002;Polit & Beck 2004).…”

“…Two aspects related to SE were examined: first, the interventions or factors that affected SE were identified and second, the outcomes that SE had an impact on were described. A conceptual model was developed to allow illustration of the relationship between two or more concepts (Mock et al 2007). The conceptual model includes SE as the main phenomenon in association with interventions (factors) that predict or change SE and the outcomes that SE has been found to influence in the post acute injury patient group (Figure 2).…”

“…Previous research by Mock and colleagues 6,35 found that fatigue was both the most intense symptom of radiation therapy and one of those most responsive to their selfpaced, home-based walking exercise program. Symptoms of fatigue were common among our participants-more than half reported weekly episodes of fatigue, and all reported fatigue in the final week-but although fatigue remained a concern for all participants, especially during the final weeks of radiation therapy, none reported exercise as worsening their fatigue.…”
