Using a Bone-Conduction Headset to Improve Speech Discrimination in Children With Otitis Media With Effusion

Abstract: The recommended management for children with otitis media with effusion (OME) is ‘watchful waiting’ before considering grommet surgery. During this time speech and language, listening skills, quality of life, social skills, and outcomes of education can be jeopardized. Air-conduction (AC) hearing aids are problematic due to fluctuating AC hearing loss. Bone-conduction (BC) hearing is stable, but BC hearing aids can be uncomfortable. Both types of hearing aids are costly. Given the high prevalence of OME and th… Show more

“…Furthermore, there is the future possibility of using the app in conjunction with novel technologies such as bone-conducting headsets via Bluetooth, to further improve access and benefit for children with the most severe conductive hearing losses. 39 A considerable advantage to the use of mobile health apps is the ability to update and improve in line with best practice, at minimal additional cost or inconvenience to end users. Following increasing appreciation of these benefits, technology in the field of paediatric audiology is rapidly evolving and exciting new innovations have the potential to support and guide family-centred care within management pathways, as NICE advocates.…”

“…3 Deafness at this time interferes with speech development, language, communication, auditory processing, self-esteem, socialisation, listening and learning. 4 The NICE guideline, "Otitis media with effusion in under 12s: surgery" suggests children with OME should have a period of "active observation" to see if OME resolves, before offering a grommet operation or hearing aid, and parents, "might like to ask" professionals, "Is there anything I can do to help my child while we wait"? 5 Practically this means wait and see if hearing impairment resolves.…”

“…Despite its temporary nature, it can cause long‐term results. About 70% of chronic patients experience mild to moderate, typically fluctuating hearing loss 5 . Although various factors have been suspected in OME aetiopathogenesis, the aetiology is not fully known.…”
