Using 18th century storm-surge data from the Dutch Coast to improve the confidence in flood-risk estimates

Abstract: Abstract. For the design of cost-effective coastal defence a precise estimate is needed of the 1 /10 000 per year storm surge. A more precise estimate requires more observations. Therefore, the three greatest storm surges that hit the northern part of the Holland Coast in the 18th century are reconstructed. The reconstructions are based on paintings, drawings, written records and shell deposits that have recently appeared. The storm-surge levels of these storms have been estimated using numerical modelling of … Show more

“…However, this method requires the knowledge of historical surges, a piece of information rarely found in archives (see e.g. Baart et al, 2011). The added value of using historical information in EVA has been widely recognised for the last 30 years in the domain of hydrology (see e.g.…”

“…The 1953 storm surge was considered as an outlier in our previous work (Hamdi et al, 2014) and in previous research (e.g., Bardet et al, 2011). Indeed, although the Gravelines NPP is designed to sustain very low probabilities of failure and despite the fact that no damage was reported at the French NPPs, the 1953 coastal flooding had shown that the extreme sea levels estimated with the current statistical approaches could be underestimated.…”

“…To be considered in the FA, a historical storm surge must be well documented; its date must be known and some information on its magnitude must be available. Mostly, available information concerns the impact and the societal disruption caused at the time of the event (Baart et al, 2011).…”

“…This allows to use a larger number of storms in the statistical assessment of the extreme skew surges. Baart et al (2011) pointed out the hitch in recovering accurate historical information. A historical event is the result of a wide investigation of several qualitative and quantitative sources.…”
