Usefulness of ultrasonography in determining the surgical excision margin in non-melanocytic skin cancer

Abstract: Skin cancer diagnoses are rising due to increasing ultraviolet ray exposure and an aging population. The complete surgical excision of skin cancer, including a normal tissue, has been the widely performed and determining the adequate safety margin is essential. In this study, we compared the preoperative thickness and width of skin cancer by ultrasonography with the measurements by histopathologic findings. A total of 211 patients were enrolled in this study and ultrasonography was performed on 30 p… Show more

“…BCCs commonly appear as oval-shaped hypoechoic dermal and/or deeper tumors with irregular borders and low to moderate vascularity with slow flow vessels (Figure 11). 1,[4][5][6][7][8]28,37,48,[68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85] Nevertheless, the morphology of these tumors may show asymmetric or hourglass shapes, among other patterns. 83 A key ultrasonographic feature of BCC is the presence of hyperechoic spots that supposedly correspond to compact nests of atypical cells and less frequently to calcifications or corneum cysts.…”

“…3 Specifically, 2 levels of complexity in the training program (basic and advanced) and two-day courses for each level were proposed. 3 It has to be taken into account that skin US might not only be useful for DFSP management but also for other types of skin cancer, 4 for US-assisted surgical treatment of hidradenitis suppurativa skin lesions, which is routinely performed for hidradenitis surgery in our hospital, and for other inflammatory skin conditions. 5…”
