Usefulness of total bladder capacity and post-void residual urine volume as a predictor of detrusor overactivity with impaired contractility in stroke patients

Abstract: Detrusor overactivity (DO) with impaired contractility (DOIC) is a mixed pattern of involuntary contraction and increased post-void residual urine volume (PVR) which occurs in stroke patients. Urodynamic study results obtained from patients with detrusor abnormalities and stroke were analyzed to identify the associations between various urodynamic parameters and DOIC. Between August 2003 and November 2010, 127 patients were selected from 178 patients undergoing urodynamic study due to urinary symptoms. Stroke … Show more

“…Our cystometric analysis of bladder function after 16 weeks of BOO (UAB group) revealed marked reductions in bladder pressure parameters and an increase in bladder compliance, which are indicative of bladder underactivity. The decreases in bladder pressures and increases in infusion volume and bladder compliance observed in the UAB group are consistent with previous clinical reports, 25,26 and these changes are likely due to an increase in collagen deposition and reduced smooth muscle contractility 18 . Experiments in rats have shown that chronic obstruction leads to impaired detrusor contractile function and a gradual decline in bladder emptying 18 .…”

“…Post void residual (PVR) was 22.64±20.85 mL in the DO group, 146.87±95.09 mL in the DOIC group, and 425.33±136.70 mL in the DU group. It was reported that total bladder capacity and PVR may provide useful information for the treatment of patients who are unable to undergo urodynamic examination (19).…”

“…The prevalence of voiding difficulty significantly increases with age and the degree of pelvic organ prolapse [ 39 , 40 ]. Additionally, voiding symptoms such as weak streams, hesitancy, and strained urination are especially prevalent in females when other comorbidities are present [ 41 ]. Specifically, the pooled incidence rate of voiding difficulty is 21.3% and 15.5% in males and females, respectively [ 42 ].…”
