Usefulness of the NMP22BladderChek Test for Screening and Follow-up of Bladder Cancer

Abstract: Purpose:We evaluated the usefulness of the nuclear matrix protein 22 BladderChek (NMP22BC) test for the screening and follow-up of bladder cancer. Materials and Methods: From February 2006 to September 2009, we enrolled 1,070 patients who had hematuria or who were being followed up for bladder cancer. We compared the sensitivity and specificity of the NMP22BC test with those of urine cytology. Results: The sensitivity of the NMP22BC test (77.5%) was significantly higher than that of urine cytology (46.3%). The… Show more

“…Such shortcomings were partly overcome by the use of the FDA-approved NMP22BC test for the diagnosis of bladder cancer and follow-up tests. The sensitivity of the NMP22BC test (77.5%) surpassed that of UC (46.3%) and the specificity of the NMP22BC test was 88.8% compared to 97.9% for UC [6]. The results of our study are in agreement with reported ranges [1,6].…”

The results of our study are in agreement with reported ranges [1,6]. Many studies reported the high sensitivity and specificity of urinary survivin mRNA in the early detection of bladder cancer by real-time RT-PCR [7,8].…”

“…The specificity of the NMP22BC test was 88.8%, compared with 97.9% for urine cytology. [49] The sensitivity of the NMP22BC test (81.8%) in non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer was higher than that of cytology (36.4%). However, the sensitivity of the NMP22BC test and of urine cytology in invasive bladder cancer were 57.1% and 92.9%, respectively.…”

“…NMP22 is thought to be released from the nuclei of tumor cells after they die and it can be detected in the urine. [42] Research has found that patients with bladder cancer may have urinary levels of NMP22 that are 25-fold greater than levels in healthy subjects.…”

“…The sensitivity of the NMP22 test was 81.3%, which was significantly greater than that of cytology at 44% (Kundal et al, 2010). There are a number of research papers in terms of early detection, diagnosis, and follow-up of bladder cancer by NMP22 assay (Arora et al, 2010;Choi et al, 2010;Iwabuchi et al, 2010;Hwang et al, 2011). The conclusion of these research literatures all demonstrate that NMP22 is a useful adjunct to urine cytology in atypical and low-grade cancer and can be used for mass screening of bladder cancer.…”
