Usefulness of the Bedside Index for Severity in Acute Pancreatitis in the Early Prediction of Severity and Mortality in Acute Pancreatitis

Abstract: We confirmed that BISAP is an accurate means of risk stratification in AP within 24 hours of presentation.

“…The accuracy of BUN and BISAP scoring system in predicting the severity of AP has been validated (11,24). According to previous studies, the AUROC of BUN in predicting OF was 0.81 (19) and in predicting persistent OF was 0.73 (12), suggesting that the predictive ability of BUN was low to moderate.…”

“…However, the majority of studies adopted the definition of OF as proposed in AC (9). In addition, the time from onset to hospital admission was not clearly defined (10)(11)(12)(13), and the predictors were often assessed at >3 days after admission (14,15).…”

“…This was similar compared to study by Cho Y, Kim H et al which had a male sex (69%) and alcohol as a etiology (42%) in their study population except that the study group had 299 population. 7 The most common cause of AP in most areas of the world is gallstones, accounting for at least 35% to 40% of cases. 8,9 In recent cohort studies of BISAP, gallstones were the leading cause (27%-36%) of AP, and alcohol was the second or third leading cause (14% -21.4%).…”

“…Termed ''PancMap,'' this resource provides an algorithm for establishing the diagnosis and severity of disease using the Bedside Index for Severity in Acute Pancreatitis (BISAP) score (Table 5), as well as calculations of initial intravenous fluid requirements and end points per goaldirected resuscitation. The BISAP score was chosen as a quick, easy method to assess severity of acute pancreatitis; multiple studies have confirmed that the BISAP predicts severity, death, and organ failure in acute pancreatitis as well as APACHE II does and better than Ranson criteria, CT severity index, and other scoring systems [43][44][45].…”
