Usefulness of the Audit of Diabetes-Dependent Quality-of-Life (ADDQoL) Questionnaire in Patients with Diabetes in a Multi-Ethnic Asian Country

Abstract: The ADDQoL is culturally appropriate, valid, reliable and well accepted among Singaporean patients with diabetes. Individualised measures such as the ADDQoL allow one to obtain precise score estimates and may offer developing countries a useful alternative to CAT.

“…Several studies showed that the most negatively impacted domains were those related to food, namely, 'freedom to eat', 'enjoyment of food' and 'freedom to drink'. Additionally, as found in our sample, 'worries about the future' is also one of the most affected domains (10,16,(30)(31)(32). “…However, the QoL is a subjective concept that includes multidimensional factors such as physical health, functioning, well-being and psychological factors. In addition, because variations exist according to ethnic and cultural backgrounds, different studies of factors influencing the QoL in patients with type 2 DM are required for different populations (9).…”

“…Of note, the English ADDQoL18 version dated 3 November 1998 was previously validated for Singapore. [6] Cognitive debriefing on a preliminary Chinese version of the questionnaire was carried out among five men and five women participants of diverse background with both T1DM and T2DM (aged 35-70 years; duration of DM = 1 month to 38 years; education = primary to tertiary). Some phrases in the ADDQoL that were particularly difficult to translate into Chinese included 'dietary measures', 'leisure activities', 'local or longdistance journeys', 'physically I could do', 'close personal relationship' and 'my freedom to eat as I wish'.…”

“…[6] However, as many as 23% of Singaporeans (aged ‡15 years) are literate in the Chinese language only, and the proportion is even higher among Singaporeans aged ‡65 years (36%). [7] This means that, for a representative and complete assessment of the psychosocial burden of DM, a Chinese version of the ADDQoL is needed for the Singaporean population.…”
