Usefulness of Lanoconazole (Astat®) cream in the treatment of hyperkeratotic type tinea pedis. Comparative study of monotherapy and combination therapy with 10% Urea Ointment (Pastaron®)

Abstract: Hyperkeratotic type tinea pedis is a refractory type of superficial dermatomycosis. Treatment for hyperkeratotic type tinea pedis is mainly with oral antimycotics, such as griseofulvin, and healing is generally considered to be difficult with only topical antimycotics. In this randomized comparative study, the usefulness of a topical application of 1% lanoconazole cream (Astat) monotherapy (group I) was compared with that of combination therapy with 1% lanoconazole cream and 10% urea ointment (Pastaron) (group… Show more

“…In this paper, we describe attempts to nondestructively determine the urea concentration in a cream formulation using Raman spectroscopy. Urea‐based creams are topical pharmaceuticals used for the treatment of many skin diseases, such as dermatitis,12 eczema,13 xerosis,14 hyperkeratotic type tinea pedis15 and recalcitrant verruca vulgaris 16. The British pharmacopoeial procedure for quantitatively analyzing a urea cream is a colorimetric method,17 which requires a great deal of sample derivatization; another method, hydrophilic interaction chromatography, is likewise time consuming for sample and mobile‐phase preparation 18, 19.…”

“…As hyperkeratotic‐type tinea pedis creates remarkable keratinisation, topically applied antifungals do not penetrate the stratum corneum deep enough. Therefore, antifungal treatment is often unsuccessful when topical antifungal is usedas monotherapy 1–4 . For this reason, oral antifungals such as griseofulvin (GRF) have long been prescribed as the first choice of drug to treat this disease 4 …”

“…Therefore, antifungal treatment is often unsuccessful when topical antifungal is used as monotherapy. [1][2][3][4] For this reason, oral antifungals such as griseofulvin (GRF) have long been prescribed as the first choice of drug to treat this disease. 4 Because of its biocidal effects on trichophyton, terbinafine (TBF) is considered more useful than GRF or itraconazole (ITCZ) for hyperkeratotic-type tinea pedis.…”
