Usefulness of different techniques for measuring body composition changes during weight loss in overweight and obese women

Abstract: The objective was to compare measures from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometry with a reference four-compartment model to estimate fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM) changes in overweight and obese women after a weight-loss programme. Forty-eight women (age 39.8^5.8 years; weight 79·2^11·8 kg; BMI 30·7^3·6 kg/m 2 ) were studied in an out-patient weight-loss programme, before and after the 16-month intervention. Women attended weekly meetings for t… Show more

“…Results from our laboratory have also shown that the BIS device used in the current investigation is a valid measurement tool for determining TBW in healthy females when compared to deuterium oxide (Moon et al 2008). Furthermore, BIS has been used to assess TBW for multi-compartment equations in previous validation studies (Minderico et al 2007;Moon et al 2007;Sardinha et al 2003). Measurement of TBW was taken while the subject was lying in a supine position on a table with arms C308 away from the torso and legs separated.…”

“…Moreover, BIA does not have weight restriction limiting its use with all extreme obese population. Several studies have compared predictions of body composition by BIA with measurements made by reference methods [4,5], but the results are contradictory, likely due to the confounding effects of multiple variables related to the clinical setting, such as range of body mass index (BMI) values and age, sex, and different diseases in the various series [4][5][6][7][8]. In particular, both over-and underestimation of percentage of FM (%FM) have been reported, whereas other studies showed good agreement between BIA and DXA.…”
