Usefulness of contrast‐enhanced ultrasound with Sonazoid for evaluating liver abscess in comparison with conventional B‐mode ultrasound

Abstract: Most of the liver abscesses showed perilesional enhancement in the vascular phase and unenhanced areas in the post-vascular phase. The appearance of liver abscesses was clearer on CEUS than on conventional US. CEUS with Sonazoid can be a more effective diagnostic and therapeutic tool for liver abscess.

“…Tumorous areas of CRC have been reported to not be enhanced with CEUS (23). The results of previous studies are in accordance with this previously published literature (20)(21)(22)(23). Previous reports and the results from the present WBC, white blood cell count; Hb, hemoglobin; CRP, c-reactive protein; CEA, carcinoembryonic antigen; CA19-9, carbohydrate antigen 19-9; Sigmoid, sigmoid colon; Ascending, ascending colon; Well, well-differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma; Mod, moderately differentiated tubular adenocarcinoma; pSS, invasion to subserosa.…”

“…In the liver, non-tumorous areas become diffusely enhanced while liver abscesses and metastases remained unenhanced (20,21). In the present study, CEUS revealed enhancement of non-tumorous areas, while CRC tissue remained unenhanced while using Sonazoid TM .…”

“…In some cases the surrounding edema can generate a hypoenhancing area in the periphery [18]. CEUS is also helpful for delineating avascular areas inside the abscess [19,20] and identifying 4 possible sonomorphologic stages of the disease: stage I -defined by focal inflammation without necrosis; stage II -by focal clusters of micro-abscesses while CEUS allows to establish the area that needs drainage and to find the best position for the tip of the drainage. Whenever possible, a transhepatic access route is preferred for direct puncture to avoid pus leakage into the peritoneal cavity.…”

“…The initial inflammatory process is often isoechoic in comparison with the surrounding organ parenchyma and occasionally difficult to recognize. The appearance of any abscess is likely to alter over time as the contents of the abscess develop (19). Almost all abscesses demonstrate irregular rim enhancement with central nonenhanced areas at CEUS (12).…”
