Usefulness of biopsy by office hysteroscopy for endometrial cancer: A case report

Abstract: A diagnostic biopsy for endometrial cancer is performed via dilation and curettage (D&C). However, D&C may miss endometrial cancer lesions due to of its ‘blind’ approach. Hysteroscopy is a useful method that can be used to detect endometrial cancer lesions. In addition, office hysteroscopy is easy to be scheduled and does not require anesthesia. The patient was a 40-year-old woman with suspected endometrial cancer; however, it could not be diagnosed by D&C and biopsy using hysteroscopy during hospitalization. … Show more

“…Office hysteroscopy has been reported as useful for diagnosing EC and sampling endometrial tissue. 13 Notable complications of diagnostic hysteroscopy for malignant lesions include the risk of dissemination. Some reports, including a meta-analysis of nine trials, showed that suspicious or positive peritoneal cytology at the time of surgery was associated with a history of hysteroscopy [14][15][16][17] ; however, several reports concluded that positive cytology after hysteroscopy did not affect the clinical stage or prognosis of patients with type I EC.…”

“…While gastrointestinal endoscopy is commonly used in the diagnosis of gastric and colorectal cancers, in general, hysteroscopy is seldom used in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer. However, our previous study [ 8 ] demonstrates the usefulness of hysteroscopy in the diagnosis of endometrial cancer. Therefore, if a hysteroscopy-based automated system employing deep-learning models is established for clinical diagnosis of endometrial cancer, an increase in the use of hysteroscopes, can be expected as well.…”

“…It is noteworthy that recent studies have suggested that hysteroscopy can be considered an effective technique for accurate endometrial-cancer diagnosis [ 6 , 7 ]. We have previously reported the usefulness of biopsy through office hysteroscopy with regard to endometrial cancer [ 8 ].…”

“…To date, the gold standard diagnostic tools for EC are surgical resection or the analysis of biopsy specimens [ 52 , 53 ]. However, false negatives caused by sampling errors can occasionally occur.…”
