Usefulness of automated cell counter in detection of malaria in a cancer set up-Our experience

Abstract: The instrument provides significantly valuable diagnostic parameters in detecting acute Plasmodium vivax malaria; however, it is not very useful for acute falciparum malaria infection. It is suggested that the laboratories using the hematology analyzers should be aware of such specific parameters, even in the absence of a clinical request.

“…In our study, WBC scattergrams showed lower sensitivity and PPV in P.falciparum detection similar to studies conducted by Jain et al [12] and Zuluaga et al 13 This could also be attributed to the low number of P. falciparum cases in the current study as P.vivax is the dominant malarial parasite in this part of the country 16. However, larger studies from P.falciparum predominant areas are required to further comment on the usefulness of analyzers in diagnosis of the same.…”

“…[3][4][5][6][7][8] However, in a tropical nation where infectious diseases such as malaria and dengue pose a greater public health burden, the utility of the WBC flags in hinting toward an underlying infection is poorly understood and scarcely documented in the literature. [9][10][11][12] We undertook this study to analyze any abnormal flags generated by a three-part automated hematology analyzer in serologically confirmed cases of dengue and correlate with other hematological parameters and PBF findings in these patients.…”

“…On the other hand, the described patterns are more sensitive to detect P. vivax, than P. falciparum and other species. 5,6 The patterns described are not related to the parasitic index but to the presence of trophozoites, schizonts or ring forms. A higher number of mature trophozoites and schizonts correlates with anomalies in the DIFF channel.…”
