Usefulness of ambulatory blood pressure measurement for hypertension management in India: the India ABPM study

Abstract: The present paper reports differences between office blood pressure (BP) measurement (OBPM) and ambulatory blood pressure measurement (ABPM) in a large multi-centre Indian all comers' population visiting primary care physicians. ABPM and OBPM data from 27,472 subjects (aged 51 ± 14 years, males 68.2%, treated 45.5%) were analysed and compared. Patients were classified based on the following hypertension thresholds: systolic BP (SBP) ≥ 140 and/or diastolic BP (DBP) ≥90 mmHg for OBPM, and SBP ≥ 130 and/or DBP ≥ … Show more

“…In India-ABPM study, a large clinic-based study involving 27472 subjects, MH and WCH were found in 19.3% and 12% respectively. 19 Though our study population was comparable to India-ABPM, the differences in prevalence may be due to the smaller sample size in our study. CV morbidity was found to be lower in WCH than sustained HTN and is said to be on par with that in normotensives in many previous studies.…”

“…For patients who were not on any medication, this misclassification percentage was higher than in those who were treated (35.2% vs. 26.7%; p<0.0001) as we have found in our study. 5…”

“…This misclassification percentage was higher than in those who were treated (35.2% vs. 26.7%; p<0.0001). 5 In this study, we evaluated use of ABPM in evaluation of young subjects who were found to be hypertensive with manual blood pressure recordings during routine medical examination before induction to high altitude areas.…”

“…India ABPM study reported white-coat hypertension and masked hypertension prevalence of 12% and 19.3%, respectively. The study reported contradiction of hypertension diagnosis in about one-third of patients with office-based BP measurement versus ABPM [ 8 ].…”

“…The Spanish Society of Hypertension ABPM registry support its usefulness in the primary care setting for the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension [ 1 ]. A multi-center, Indian ABPM study has also demonstrated the usefulness of ABPM for the management of hypertension in Indian patients [ 8 ]. A systematic review has suggested that home-based BP monitoring helps in improvement of patient-centered care, control of BP and patient outcomes [ 9 ].…”
