Usefulness of a psychometric questionnaire in exploring parental attitudes in children's dental care

Abstract: In this methodological study we investigated the usefulness and reliability of a questionnaire designed to capture 4 aspects of parental dental attitudes: dental knowledge, child oral health behavior, perceived importance of dental related aims, and parental responsibility. The study was undertaken in a group of 140 parents of schoolchildren aged 8-12 years from four comprehensive schools in Sweden. Test-retest reliability, quantified by the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) or by Cohen's kappa, varied … Show more

“…Most of these aspects were also included in the questionnaire used among parents in the reference group. In addition to background characteristics and measures of dental fear, four areas of questions, described in detail in a previous methodological study (30), were selected for this report. Thus, aspects of the parents' dental knowledge, their assessments of the child's oral health behavior, their view of the importance of dental related aims and the amount of responsibility they took for their children's dental health behavior or dental treatment were included.…”

“…See Table 2 for item definition. Comparisons were also made to answers given by a group of experts in pediatric dentistry or cariology (valid n =20) asked to take part in validation of the instrument as reported in a previous methodological study (30). Transformation to individual knowledge scores (range −1–+1) were made by calculating the product moment correlation coefficient (Pearson's r) between the eight ratings from every single parent and the profile of mean ratings given by the group of experts (30) and thereby expressing knowledge as a level of agreement with the experts.…”

“…As they grow up, the children's independence makes supervised tooth brushing more difficult [Skeie et al, 2004]. In a study by Arnrup et al [2001], it was shown that only 16% of 8-to 12-year-olds received daily brushing help or assistance from their parents.…”

“…La evaluación de las respuestas de conocimientos, actitudes y prácticas fue coincidentemente aceptable, discrepando de otros estudios donde generalmente conocimientos y actitudes corresponden a categorías buenas-excelentes y, las prácticas a malas (15). Esto puede deberse a una tendencia cultural a contestar correctamente, (1), como se refleja en el ENSAB-III (14), donde a pesar de que la mayoría conoce cómo prevenir la caries, el 60 % asiste a consulta por urgencia.…”
