Use of Thermally Assisted Hydrolysis and Methylation (THM-GC-MS) to Unravel Influence of Pottery Production and Post-Depositional Processes on the Molecular Composition of Organic Matter in Sherds from a Complex Coastal Settlement

Abstract: Ceramic fragments from the Islet of Guidoiro Areoso (NW Spain), covering a wide range of cultural periods (Neolithic to Late Bronze Age), have been studied by color analysis, elemental analysis of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N), and molecular analysis (thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation, THM-GC-MS), in order to identify the organic matter (OM) in the prehistoric pottery and reveal information on ceramic production techniques, food remains and post-depositional effects. Results showed that the strong ma… Show more

“…Fourthly, to detect the main insoluble or macromolecular constituents in kiln fabric, using pyrolysis techniques − more specifically, pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (Py-GC-MS)− , which can yield information on manufacturing conditions. Furthermore, thermally assisted hydrolysis and methylation (THM-GC-MS) can sometimes be used to identify plant remains and fatty acid patterns even when present as only a small fraction of the organic matter (Kaal et al 2021;Shoda et al 2018). This information can then be used to predict which samples could yield relevant results for "residue analysis" with the more labour-intensive GC-MS studies of lipid extracts.…”

“…In recent decades, Py-GC/MS has been extensively used to study organic materials in art, archaeology, and conservation practice, with special attention to the characterization of synthetic polymeric matrices [17][18][19]. Py-GC/MS is based on the thermal breakdown of the macromolecules of the samples, whose fragments are separated by gas chromatography and finally detected by mass spectrometry.…”
