Use of the SAND balloon catheter for safe and easy laparoscopic removal of adrenal cysts

Abstract: Introduction Surgical resection should be considered for giant adrenal cysts if they are functional, if malignancy cannot be ruled out, or if there is a risk of bleeding. However, preventing cyst damage, including fluid leak, and ensuring a good field of view could be challenging in laparoscopic surgery. We report on our successful use of the SAND balloon catheter in laparoscopic adrenalectomy. Case presentation The patient was a 40‐year‐old man with a right adrenal cyst that exhibited growth tendency. We perf… Show more

“…However, the development of double-balloon SAND catheters for safe aspiration and the use of endobags prior to removal in laparoscopic surgery has reduced concerns regarding the seeding of the abdominal cavity with cyst content. 19 Moreover, the laparoscopic approach allows for precise visualization of the cyst and its surrounding structures through high-definition video imaging systems. This enhanced visualization aids in the accurate identification of critical anatomical landmarks and ensures meticulous dissection and cyst removal while minimizing the risk of inadvertent damage to neighboring organs, nerves, or blood vessels.…”

“…The specific indication for the SAND balloon catheter is aspiration and washing of ovarian cystic fluid and alcohol fixation of the cyst wall; the catheter is not traditionally indicated for AC. Nevertheless, there have been reports of its use in the treatment of ovarian tumors 13 and other conditions 14 . However, only one report to date has described its use in AC 10 .…”

“…There was no adhesion in the abdominal cavity. The cyst fluid was aspirated by a SAND balloon catheter [ 5 ] without intraperitoneal spillage. The cyst collapsed gradually, and nine liters of liquid, light yellow in color, were aspirated.…”
