Use of the ‘patient journey’ model in the internet-based pre-fitting counseling of a person with hearing disability: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

Abstract: BackgroundHearing impairment is one of the most frequent chronic conditions. Persons with a hearing impairment (PHI) have various experiences during their ‘journey’ through hearing loss. In our previous studies we have developed a ‘patient journey’ model of PHI and their communication partners (CPs). We suggest this model could be useful in internet-based pre-fitting counseling of a person with hearing disability (PHD).Methods/DesignA randomized controlled trial (RCT) with waiting list control (WLC) design wil… Show more

“…Importantly, a new stage was added to the patient journey model: adaptation, which occurs immediately before resolution. Adaptation included examples such as ''exploring new ways of dealing with PHI's communication difficulties'' (Manchaiah et al, 2013). In the present study, the adult children described a gradual, ongoing cycle of communication management.…”

“…In some cases, resolution indicated an end to the process (e.g., problems satisfactorily resolved), but in other cases, it indicated the beginning of a new process (e.g., identification of new problems). When the journey was investigated from the CP point of view, there was even less of a resolution (Manchaiah et al, 2013). Here, resolution was described as continued difficulties in communication during social situations (Manchaiah et al, 2013).…”

“…The study had a cross-sectional design, with data obtained through an online survey during a clinical trial (i.e., pre-intervention data) of a pre-fitting counseling program (Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Protocol Registration System NCT01611129) [ 39 , 40 ]. Clinical trial results have been presented elsewhere [ 40 ], however, here we report additional analysis using a different theoretical framework (i.e., TTM) that was not reported in earlier publications.…”
