Use of the Female Sexual Function Index in Women with Vulvar Intraepithelial Neoplasia

Abstract: The present investigation extends the validation of the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI; Rosen et al., 2000) to include women with vulvar excisions for vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN). No instrument previously has been validated in this population. We administered the instrument to 43 women (n = 43) with VIN treated with vulvar excision and age-matched healthy controls (n = 43). We found the FSFI to have high reliability and validity in the VIN excision population. Discriminant validity and internal … Show more

“…The BACH FSFI total score was found to correlate highly with the original FSFI total score in this clinical sample (Pearson r = .98, p < .001) and had high internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .92). The original FSFI instrument was additionally validated using empirically derived cutoff scores and normative data from different samples (Likes, Stegbauer, Hathaway, Brown, & Tillmanns, 2006;Masheb, Lozano-Blanco, Kohorn, Minkin, & Kerns, 2004;Meston, 2003;Sidi, Puteh, Abdullah, & Midin, 2006). For the original FSFI, a cutoff score of 26.5 was determined based on a sensitivity score of .80 and a specificity score of .85 (Wiegel et al, 2005), and scores equal to or below the cut-off score were used to indicate the presence of sexual problems.…”

“…12,21,22 It has also shown good reliability. 1,21,22 The Chinese version of the FSFI is an accepted screening tool because of its excellent wording, clear scale structure and demonstrated validity and reliability (a range from 0.81 to 0.92). 17 The internal consistency alpha values were 0.94 for the overall scale and 0.76-0.95 for its subscales in this study.…”

“…[1][2][3][4][5] However, the role of the pelvic floor in sexual function has not been fully elucidated. 6 Despite the fact that the anus is a part of the pelvic floor structure, the clinical attention given to sexual problems in hemorrhoidectomy patients has been negligible.…”

“…The BACH FSFI total score was found to correlate highly with the FSFI total score in the original sample (Pearson r = .979, p < .001) and have high internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha = .917). The original FSFI instrument has been additionally validated using empirically derived cutoff scores and normative data from different samples (49)(50)(51). For the original FSFI, a cutoff score of 26.5 was determined based on a sensitivity score of .801 and a specificity score of .851 (46), and scores equal to or below the cut-off score are used to indicate presence of sexual dysfunction.…”
