“…82 The study by Conine and colleagues 82 studied patients quite dissimilar from those in this trial, namely, people with neurological disease aged between 18 and 55 years. The studies most similar to this one, evaluating some form of alternating pressure mattress in (mainly) older hospital patients, reported pressure ulcer risk on alternating pressure as follows: Hampton 0, 80 Taylor 0 and 9%, 81 Price 2%, 83 Gebhardt 16%, 84 Exton-Smith 16% and 39% 85 and Stapleton 34%. 86 Clearly, the risk of ulceration reported in the PRESSURE Trial (10%) is consistent with these wide-ranging figures.…”

“…Of five clinical trials on the effect of different types of alternating pressure air support on pressure ulcer incidence, only one found one type of alternating pressure air support to be superior to another (Exton‐Smith et al . ), and when the results of this study were analysed according to the intention to treat rather than the protocol, the statistical significance of the difference disappeared (McInnes et al . ).…”

“…The most recent reviews on the effect of support surfaces on pressure ulcer onset found no clear evidence on the comparative effectiveness of different types of alternating pressure air support (McInnes et al 2008). Of five clinical trials on the effect of different types of alternating pressure air support on pressure ulcer incidence, only one found one type of alternating pressure air support to be superior to another (Exton-Smith et al 1982), and when the results of this study were analysed according to the intention to treat rather than the protocol, the statistical significance of the difference disappeared (McInnes et al 2008). A large and robust trial in surgical patients found no difference in clinical effectiveness between alternating pressure air mattresses and overlays (RR: 1Á04; 95% CI: 0Á81 to 1Á35), but reported that overlays were probably more cost effective (Nixon et al 2006).…”
