Use of technology in simulation training in midwifery

Abstract: Simulation and skills training support the development of midwifery competencies. Midwives will already be familiar with torsos, dolls and pelvises to simulate abdominal palpations, neonatal resuscitation and mechanisms of labour. The use of high-fidelity simulation through technologically advanced manikins in skills training for the midwifery students has also been developed, and it is hoped that this will increase students' performance in effectively managing maternal resuscitation and other obstetric emerge… Show more

“…Lack of exposure to NIPE practice could be complemented by using simulation in clinical skills laboratories. Simulation is gaining momentum in substituting reduced opportunities for hands-on clinical experience (Martins et al, 2018;NMC, 2019;Chitonga and Suthers, 2019). New, high-quality simulation equipment can lead to skills development for example, hip examination, particularly where clinical experience opportunities are lacking but is not a substitute for the real thing (Hall and Snowden 2018).…”

“…Opportunity to practice skills and simulate critical decision making in the management of maternity emergencies should be a core component of any undergraduate midwifery program. These types of immersive simulations provide students opportunities to experience managing a complex scenario they may not encounter on clinical placement, allowing them to practise skills, make mistakes and develop competence and confidence in a safe environment (Chitongo & Suthers, 2019). Simulation of maternity emergencies not only develops student's confidence but also facilitates sound decision-making skills in high-risk situations, while building students' autonomy, communication and social skills (Chitongo & Suthers, 2019).…”

The associated learning outcomes of the planned simulation laboratory session related to two areas of maternity emergencies, management of shoulder dystocia and estimation of postpartum blood loss.…”

“…Araştırmada incelediğimiz diğer bir çalışmada yüksek gerçeklikli simülasyonda kullanılan farklı senaryoların katılımcıların stres düzeyini etkilemediği görülmüştür (16) . Bu bulgu literatürle uyumludur (44,47) . Yenidoğan resüsitasyon kılavuzları tarafından simülasyon tabanlı eğitimler önerilmiş olmasına rağmen incelenen çalışmalarda farklı sonuçlar bulunmuştur.…”
