Use of steel slag and quartz sand‐tailing for the preparation of an eco‐friendly permeable brick

Abstract: In order to effectively utilize industrial solid wastes (ISW), an eco-friendly permeable brick was successfully prepared by using quartz sand-tailing and steel slag. The influence of sintering temperature on the properties including permeability, apparent porosity, water absorption, bulk density, mechanical strengths, and chemical stability was systematically investigated. The research results show that with increasing sintering temperature, the structure of the permeable brick gradually become dense, which ma… Show more

“…Furthermore, the chemical stability of the SSPB was also studied in this work and shown in Figure 4D. 19 Figure 1E, when the sintering F I G U R E 2 SEM images (A) and digital photographs (B) of the SSPB sintered between 1210 and 1300°C for 1 hour. However, for the alkali-resistance, as the sintering temperature increases, it decreases from 99.98% to 99.83%.…”

“…The determination of sintering temperature is based on our previous work. 19 Figure 1E, when the sintering temperature increases from 1000 to 1200°C, the diffraction peak intensities including Magnesium Silicate at 2θ degree around 35° and Calcium Silicate at 2θ degree near 32.5° decrease, and the XRD pattern of the SSPB sintered at 1100°C shows a weak diffraction peak in the 2θ range of 30-32.5°, which is attributed to the characteristic peak of Akermanite. Thus, we can reasonably speculate that the formation temperature of Akermanite is about 1100°C in this study.…”

“…The fundamental properties of permeable bricks are mechanical property and permeability coefficient. However, various reports indicate [ 24 , 25 ] that there is a negative correlation between them. Therefore, the related studies on the application of CG in porous materials are rare owing to its vitrification at high temperatures.…”

“…There is no activated carbon in the scale. 5,9 Due to the formation of scale in rolled steel, there is a 5% loss of material, which corresponds to a level of 10 000 kilograms per year in large steel factories. 6 Companies and governments have started to carry out research and projects in order to minimize the economic and environmental damages caused by industry-generated casting waste, and many successful results have been achieved.…”
