Use of stable isotopes to evaluate the functional effects of nutrients

Abstract: Stable isotopes can now be used to measure the kinetics and oxidation rate of circulating metabolites and also body composition, colonic fermentation, intestinal absorption, and important intratissular metabolic pathways, such as gluconeogenesis, lipogenesis, cholesterol synthesis, the turnover rate of triglycerides, individual protein synthesis and cell proliferation. Deuterated water has emerged as a powerful and versatile tool, allowing the simultaneous investigation of several aspects of protein, lipid and… Show more

“…To increase reliability of the results, at least on cholesterol absorption, we followed the recommendation to use two markers, sitosterol and campesterol, instead of one (62). Our findings require further confirmation through the stable isotope technique (63).…”

“…First, double-tracer methods 25 , which determine orally absorbed tracer molecules and their plasma concentration must be compensated for metabolic losses with the aid of second, intravenously applied tracer. Hence, these methods are very expensive.…”

“…This test has a high correlation with maximal lipase production after hormonal stimulation, indicating that this is an excellent test to determine lipase activity in the duodenum. The 13 C‐labelled substrate for pancreatic enzymes is administered orally in a test breakfast; after digestion, 13 CO 2 is released, which can be measured in breath air (Beylot, ; Domínguez‐Muñoz et al, ).…”

“…The following tests were performed: 13 C‐labelled triglycerides digestion test: This test is a breath test that allows for the evaluation of digestive function (Beylot, ; Domínguez‐Muñoz, Iglesias‐García, Vilariño‐Insua, & Iglesias‐Rey, ). After fasting overnight, on the morning of the study, 10 mg metoclopramide was administered to ensure gastric emptying.…”
