Use of spider silk fibres as an innovative material in a biocompatible artificial nerve conduit

Abstract: Defects of peripheral nerves still represent a challenge for surgical nerve reconstruction. Recent studies concentrated on replacement by artificial nerve conduits from different synthetic or biological materials. In our study, we describe for the first time the use of spider silk fibres as a new material in nerve tissue engineering. Schwann cells (SC) were cultivated on spider silk fibres. Cells adhered quickly on the fibres compared to polydioxanone monofilaments (PDS). SC survival and proliferation was norm… Show more

“…Modern uses of spider silk already involve using silk from spiders such as Nephila clavipes to help in mammalian neuronal regeneration [17]. Nephila silk in this case did not appear to provoke an auto immune response.…”

“…[63] Spider silks have already been shown to support the proliferation of Schwann cells, allowing the design of artificial nerve conduits. [72] Taken together, silk-based biomaterials are promising scaffolds for engineering skeletal tissues such as bone, ligaments, and cartilage as well as nerve or connective tissues like skin. [54,57,63,[72][73][74] Further applications of silk are cosmetic products, such as shampoos, soaps, creams, and nail varnish.…”
