Use of space by Necromys lasiurus (Rodentia, Sigmodontinae) in a grassland among Atlantic Forest fragments

Abstract: The spatial patterns presented by the rodent Necromys lasiurus were studied through capture-mark-recapture in a grassland among Atlantic Coastal Forest fragments in Southeastern Brazil. Males moved farther than females. Males moved similar distances in the dry and wet seasons, whereas females moved significantly longer distances in the dry season. Home ranges sizes were estimated for 32 individuals, and varied from 0.02 to 0.52 ha. Males had larger home ranges than females when all data are pooled and in the w… Show more

“…The Bartonella genotypes found in N. squamipes are closely related to those described in previous studies, in Oecomys mamorae (clade A; de Sousa et al, 2018 ), Hylaeamys megacephalus , N. lasiurus and O. nigripes (clade E and clade I; Gonçalves et al, 2016a ). The Bartonella genotypes found in N. squamipes were closely related to those found in rodents from three biomes – the Atlantic Forest ( O. nigripes : Agrellos et al, 2012 ; Weksler, 2003 ), the Cerrado ( N. lasiurus and H. megacephalus : Becker et al, 2007 ; Pires et al, 2010 ; Weksler et al, 2006 ) and Pantanal ( Oecomys mamorae : de Sousa et al, 2018 ; Carleton et al, 2009 ). These findings indicate a lack of specificity in this Bartonella genotype , given its occurrence not only in different tribes of cricetid rodents, but also in different Brazilian biomes.…”

“…A pattern that has been found for some species of rodents based on space use is the polygyny (GAULIN & FITZGERALD 1988, OSTFELD 1990). This mating system was attributed to T. apereoides (STREILEIN 1982b, THOMPSON 1985, and for some hystricognath (BERGALLO 1995, BERGALLO & MAGNUSON 1999 and Sigmodontinae (BONAVENTURA et al 1992, HEINEMANN et al 1995, GENTILE et al 1997, BERGALLO & MAGNUSON 1999, PIRES et al 2010 rodents. In this system, the males tend to travel greater areas in their search for females during the reproductive period, and the spacing patterns of males will be determined directly by the spacing of females rather than by resource distribution; in turn the females depending on resources distributed in patches tend to exhibit territorial tendencies and sometimes they are faced with the need to defend resources (OSTFELD 1990).…”

“…A species rarefaction curve was performed in order to assess sample size adequacy. We assumed that for a given helminth species, hosts were infected in the habitat of the localities where they were collected, as N. lasiurus presents short movements and small home-range sizes (Pires et al, 2010).…”
