Use of Skin Flaps in Dermatologic Surgery of the Face

Abstract: Surgical ablation of some cutaneous conditions often result in defects which are difficult to close by primary suture. Pedicle flaps are especially useful for closure of deep defects. They consist of skin and subcutaneous tissue which contain blood supply from the site from which they are raised. This paper discusses the specific use of these grafts.

“…Since forehead flaps have constant arterial anatomy with a rich vascular network, wide arc of rotation, appropriate thickness, and provide good harmony with surrounding skin (Konz, 1975), they can be used isolated or in conjunction with other local and regional flaps for repair of simple to three dimensional Quatela et al (1995) and Park (2000) used the forehead flap for defects larger than 1.5e2 cm. Price et al (2004) stated that forehead flaps are an excellent choice for reconstruction of intermediate-sized periorbital defects, especially associated with nasal defects.…”

“…Skin flaps are used in reconstructive surgeries to cover areas with inadequate blood supply or to resurface exposed bones or areas where no transplant can be used. Such examples are the reconstruction of eyelids, lips, ears, noses, and cheeks as well as the repair of body‐wide defects . Skin flaps are usually preferred over skin grafts in plastic surgeries, because they have been proven superior in terms of aesthetic and functional results.…”

“…Since the 1970s, the subcutaneously pedicled flap has also become increasingly popular in dermatologic surgery. Many authors of our time emphasize its outstanding perfusion and broad applicability in a wide variety of locations, especially the face .…”
