Use of Saponinosomes from Ziziphus spina-christi as Anticancer Drug Carriers

Abstract: Saponins are plant glycosides with different structures and biological activities, such as anticancer effects. Ziziphus spina-christi is a plant rich in saponin, and this compound is used to treat malignant melanoma in the present study. Nanophytosomes can be used as an advantageous nanodrug delivery system for plant extracts. The aim of this work is to use the saponin-rich fraction (SRF) from Z. spina-christi and prepare SRF-loaded nanophytosomes (saponinosomes) a… Show more

“…The peak of 1036.65 cm −1 refers to the C-O stretches of holocellulose and lignin [ 81 ], which may come from ether and phenol [ 12 ], or the carboxylic and alcohol groups [ 86 ], and can also be attributed to the linkage absorption C-O-C [ 87 ] to oligosaccharide present in the structure of saponin [ 27 , 88 ], assuming that this substance has not been completely removed by contact with 0.5 N NaOH, as the alkaline treatment generally induces extensive modifications in the polysaccharides [ 89 , 90 ]. After contact with Pb(II) ions, the enlargement and increase in intensity of this region can be noticed.…”

“… 32 Zizyphus Spina containing saponin disrupts the cell wall of Candida albicans. 33 Additionally, Zizyphus Spina has endophytic A. Alternaria, which has potent antioxidant activity that can cause cell membrane disruption. 34 Finally, the tannins in Zizyphus Spina, by eliminating Iron, reduce the pathogen growth and proliferation.…”

“…There is a growing interest between researchers and pharmaceutical production in enhancing the delivery and improving the bioavailability of drugs to improve their therapeutic efficacy. Particularly, the self-assembly approach holds great promise for designing effective delivery systems. , Liposomes are one of the drug delivery systems that are frequently used as a carrier for the lipophilic and hydrophilic antioxidant agents to evaluate their antioxidant activities . Moreover, liposomes are also used as an efficient delivery system for water-soluble (e.g., glutathione, N-acetylcysteine, and quercetin) and lipid-soluble (e.g., tocopherol and CoQ10) antioxidant medicines to various organs and tissues for the treatment of oxidative stress-associated damage. Recently, there has been a growing interest in exploring innovative approaches to enhance drug delivery systems for improved bioavailability and therapeutic efficacy. , Among these approaches, the incorporation of bioactive compounds into the structure of liposomes has gained significant attention .…”
