Use of rice protein concentrates inOreochromis niloticusdiets and its effect on growth, intestinal morphology, biochemical indices and ghrelin gene expression

Abstract: Fish meal (FM) is a significant source of protein, but the high cost has limited its use in feeds. Hence, alternative, economic and available FM substitutes should be found. In this study, the consequences of replacing FM with rice protein concentrate (RPC) on the growth parameters, proximate body composition, digestive and absorptive capabilities, biochemical parameters and the expression of appetite‐related gene (ghrelin) in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus, were investigated. Fish (27.8 ± 0.1 g) were ran… Show more

“…Organs such as the intestine are of vital physiological importance in maintaining fish health ( Abdel Rahman et al, 2021 ). In the intestine, treatment with 0.25% inclusions promoted significant improvements in the increase in the number of villi, villi length, villi width, increase in the number of goblet cells and villi area ( Table 2 and Figure 4 ).…”

“…Liver is the main organ responsible for detoxification in all vertebrates including fish; therefore, it is usually exposed to numerous endogenous and exogenous free radicals which result from the degradation of metabolic products [49]. CAT, GSH and SOD are the crucial antioxidant enzymes, which exhibits a major contribution in indicating the oxidative status in freshwater fish [50,51]. Both GSH and SOD have been reported to ameliorate the oxidative injury of different cells [52,53].…”

“…Following that, growth metrics were computed, and the findings were recorded in reports issued every 30 days, specifically at the 30, 60, and 90 days. The growth parameters, such as weight gain (WG), average daily gain (ADG), specific growth rate (SGR), feed conversion rate (FCR), survival rate (SR), and protein efficiency ratio (PER), were calculated following the formulas provided by Abdel Raman et al [16]:…”
