Use of remote sensing and GIS techniques for groundwater exploration in the basement complex terrain of Ado-Ekiti, SW Nigeria

Abstract: Integrated investigations involving remote sensing and GIS have been conducted with the objective of achieving optimal results in sustainable groundwater development in Ado-Ekiti, southwestern Nigeria. The hard rock terrain in the region presents challenges in groundwater exploration. Landsat imageries were used for landuse/landcover mapping and lineament analysis for groundwater prospecting. Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission Digital Elevation Model was used for drainage network extraction, slope and geomorpho… Show more

“…By implication, Ureje and Awedele urban rivers will have a high propensity for nonpoint source pollution problems and could derive more benefit from wider riparian buffers than higher-order rivers. Reports on the Ado-Ekiti basement complex terrain depict a high occurrence of medium-to small-sized rivers [74], an indication that surface water vulnerability may be a regional-scale problem.…”

“…The predominant rocks forming the basement complex are categories as the migmatite-gneiss complex, the schist belts and the Pan-African granites (Afolagboye, Talabi and Akinola, 2016). The rock formations in this location are reported to be granite rocks, charnockitic rocks, quartzite series, gneisses and migmatites (Oyedele, 2019). Outcrop of quartzites occurrence in Ado Ekiti can rise to 100 m above the surrounding ground level.…”

“…Landfill site selection is acknowledged as a complicated process as it entails consideration of a large number of variables [1,5]. It is a tasking enterprise particularly in the basement complex terrain which is known to be hydrogeologically challenging with hydraulic properties characterized by extreme variations over short distances [19][20][21]. Environmental protection and public health considerations are the primary concerns in landfill site selection [3,11,22].…”
