Three subspecies of Marchantia polymorpha have been recently characterized by isozyme patterns, ecology and morphological characters. To confirm their taxonomic status and to better understand their relationships and genetic variability, a previous study on enzyme polymorphism was extended to additional colonies and enzymes. A parallel study was done with DNA markers derived from restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) and random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD). Results obtained with these different approaches (protein and DNA level) all support the taxonomic distinctness of the subspecies. Genetic similarity within subspecies was found to be high over wide geographic areas, and low among subspecies. The genetic divergence of the three subspecies may be taken to illustrate a case of speciation with adaptation to different ecological niches, and subsequent reproductive isolation. The hybrid origin of Marchantia polymorpha subsp. ruderalis, postulated in the past, is not supported by our data.

RESUMENEl endemismo es uno de los principales aspectos que trata la biogeografía histórica y es uno de los criterios más importantes para establecer las prioridades de conservación de las especies. En el mundo, más del 90% de las plantas que se encuentra en alguna categoría de amenaza son endémicas de un sólo país. En Chile, un 45% de las especies de plantas vasculares son endémicas. Actualmente este número incluye 83 géneros y 4 familias endémicas del país; éstos son valores elevados en comparación con el resto de Latinoamérica. Sin embargo, la alta tasa de cambios producidos por los estudios de sistemática molecular en la taxonomía ha generado modificaciones en estos números. Este trabajo pretende discutir dichas modificaciones y así contribuir a la correcta delimitación de estos géneros endémicos. Utilizando bases de datos y bibliografía actualizadas, se llevó a cabo una revisión exhaustiva sobre estos géneros. Se sustrajeron de la lista aquellos géneros con registros fuera del país y aquellos que cuentan con evidencia suficiente para cambiar su estatus taxonómico. Se entrega una revisión crítica de la bibliografía sistemática respecto de los géneros en cuestión, discutiendo principalmente aquellos que a la luz de la literatura presentaron ambigüedades en su clasificación. PALABRAS CLAVE:Endemismo, Sistemática molecular, Filogenia molecular, Conservación biológica. ABSTRACTEndemism is one of the main considerations in historical biogeography and one of the most important criteria when establishing conservation priorities. Worldwide, more than 90% of the plants listed in conservation categories are endemic to one country. In Chile, 45% of the flora is endemic, currently considering 83 endemic genera and 4 endemic families, elevated numbers compared to the rest of Latinamerica. However, the high rate of changes in taxonomy, based on studies of molecular systematics has produced modifications in this list. This study aims at discussing such modifications and in this way, contribute to the correct delimitation of our endemic genera. Using updated databases and bibliographic sources, an exhaustive revision of these genera was carried out. Genera with registries outside of the country, as well as those that had enough evidence to change their taxonomic status were subtracted from the list. A critical revision of the systematic bibliography available is provided, emphasizing the discussion on those genera with ambiguous classification status.

The genetic constitution and diversity of four relictual redwoods are discussed in this review. These include monotypic genera of the family Cupressaceae: coast redwood (Sequoia sempervirens), giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum), dawn redwood (Metasequoia glyptostroboides), and alerce (Fitzroya cupressoides). All four species are narrow endemics, share a number of common phenotypic traits, including red wood, and are threatened species. Fossil history suggests that the ancestors of redwoods probably originated during the Cretaceous and Tertiary periods and Xourished thereafter for millions of years. Towards the end of the Tertiary period began their decline and struggle for existence that continued during the subsequent geologic upheavals and climate changes, until the survival of the presentday redwoods in the current restricted locations in the world (USA, China, and South America). Although two species, Sequoiadendron and Metasequoia, are diploids (2n = 22), and the other two are polyploids: Fitzroya a tetraploid (2n = 4x = 44), and Sequoia a hexaploid (2n = 6x = 66); they all share the same basic chromosome number x = 11. The genome size in the hexaploid Sequoia is one of the largest (31,500 MB) in the conifers, while the genome sizes of diploid Metasequoia and Sequoiadendron are about one-third (»10,000 MB) of Sequoia. Genetic diversity in the redwoods is lower than most other gymnosperms, except in Sequoia, which seems to rank near the upper quarter of the coniferous forest trees. Genomic research is sparse in the redwoods, and should be pursued for a better understanding of their genome structure, function, and adaptive genetic diversity.
